Thank you, Sophomore Year

With today being the last day of class, I must say it is definitely hitting me. End of the semester blues…

We all look for the end of semester since the first day of it, but as it approaches we realize that we’ve spent so much time with our JMU family that it feels weird to go back to our Hometown family. This year has definitely been one to remember- from meeting new friends, gaining a niece, losing an aunt, signing my first lease, and most of all, a year FULL of self discovery.

Someone asked me yesterday why haven’t seen much of me all year, and, like always, I responded “I do go out! I don’t know why you haven’t seen me!” But then I realized that might have been the biggest lie I’ve told all year.

This year has been one of self-discovery to say the very least. I have grown to know who I am and what I want. I’ve also realized that before, I was living for everyone BUT me. And it feels good! I feel so good. I know I’m still on a path of self-discovery, but Lord knows I’m glad to finally be on the right path. Although my grades aren’t the best that they have ever been (don’t worry, 4 A’s and 1 B) I’ve found that college is full of so much more than homework and essays and everything else that we college students tend to stress over.

All that stuff is great, but the most amazing part, is that I’ve finally figured out where my heart lies. Career-wise, of course. Stepping foot into my Public Relations class this semester, I knew that I would leave with confirmation that PR is what I want to do. However, this course has helped me figure out that I will begin a mentorship program.

Through the semester, we were to remain focused on one organization and learn that organization inside out. We composed media kits and informational kits on this organization, and basically acted as their Director of Communications. I focused on a non-profit organization that I’ve mentioned in a previous post.

Because of this, I’ve found that non-profit is where I want to be. I want to help young people along their journey, beginning at a young age, and see them off to college. I haven’t got it all together yet, but with the help of God and my new Non-Profit studies minor… I will ūüôā

So…Thank you, Sophomore Year. It’s truly been an honor.

Drama, Drama, DRAMA

For two consecutive posts I have succumbed to this hold that reality television has over me!! But I seriously cannot help but talk about this one– Love and Hip Hop Atlanta Season 3.

VH1 is definitely on a roll with this one! So after last season, we could not wait to see more. Between Stevie J and his love triangles, Scrappy and his mess, and Kirk¬†and Rasheeda Frost’s ¬†new baby on the way many of us were literally glued to the TV. Don’t talk to me, don’t look at me, don’t breathe– that kind of glued to the TV.

But this next season.. I might have to go in hiding for this. I cannot wait! If you haven’t already seen the super trailer for Season 3, it is definitely worth watching (if you get into this kind of stuff). I was literally on the edge of the chair when I saw it!

It will be full of drama to say the least, but the most talk will, and has already, stemmed from the release of Mimi Faust and Nikko’s sex tape! What are they doing!? At this point, it is so hard tell whether or not these two purposely leaked this tape or if it was a mistake like they previously said it was. As sad as it is to say, I honestly cannot wait to see what this season brings as a result of this. I know Stevie J, ex and child’s father of Mimi Faust, is definitely not going to just slide under his radar.

With the release¬†of this sex tape being only about 3 weeks prior to the airing of the premiere of this season, I can’t help but think that this was purposely done. It was free advertisement, not the LHHATL doesn’t already have a audience ready and waiting to tune in every week. Mimi and Nikko definitely have us waiting to watch. I’m sure Mona Scott Young, producer of the show, will enjoy watching the numbers rise as more and more people begin to tune in because of this scandal…if it can be called that.

Tune in, May 5th 8 p.m.! (ET)

Security or Sodomy?

As I was making my daily rounds of checking my social networks I noticed a friend post a picture of a news article titled “ODU police charge security guard with raping student.”

Let that sink in.

A security guard reported to have raped a student¬†is the most contradictory thing I’ve heard all week, and by far the saddest and most disgusting. This man who has been hired to provide security for students has raped one. I’m very intrigued to know his perception of his job description.

More importantly, I’m concerned as to what Old Dominion University is going to do about this. Of course, fire him, but then what? ODU needs to ensure that there students feel (and are) safe at all times. Even thought this happened off-campus, it was still in the area and in a college apartment complex. Considering the fact the ODU is also placed in the heart of Norfolk, Va., the safety of students should be the main concern.

This situation is tricky though. You hire security to protect students, but then the security is the person that needs to be protected against. I’m sure crisis management is on the job, but I feel for the students of ODU. I’m sure a sense of unrest and fear is taking over the campus.

Michael Spearman, 30, of Norfolk was arrested Sunday and charged with one count rape and two counts forcible sodomy, according to ODU spokeswoman Giovanna Genard.

Real Basketball Wives of LA…. More like Real Basketball, Football, Wives, Girlfriends, Side Chicks, NUTCASES of LA.

I couldn’t stay away from it for too long– reality TV, that is. I was trying so hard not to make my blog posts about reality TV since that crap already consumes so much of our lives BUT, this week, I HAD TO DO IT.

Am I the only that thinks Real Basketball Wives of LA is the most ridiculous thing on TV? These women are all so petty and child-like that every week I watch in hopes that it will just ONE episode that they might just get along for an hour, or 52 minutes (however long the episode is). But of course, those dreams are never lived out.

Now, even though I think they are all crazy, I must say that I got a kick out of Draya¬†punching Sundy Carter out after talking¬†¬†about Draya’s son. You just don’t talk about people’s children. But anyway, that’s neither here nor there.¬†

Draya gives Sundy a black eye:

Draya Tweets About Hitting Sundy Carter:

But my biggest concern is that these are the wives, girlfriends, supporters, and (as quiet as it’s kept) side chicks, of famous athletes. They are tearing these men’s brands DOWN. And needless to say, no grown woman should be carrying themselves this way! I’m sure when it’s recruitment time for these men, coaches can’t help but think that they are as messy as their counterparts. These women have the floor to help build the names of their families (or aspiring family in Draya’s case) and¬†don’t even realize it. Shame, shame.

Sadly enough… I STILL will be tuning in next week.

Really…He’s 15

So I was on Bossip today, and came across this crazy article about a Cypress Fairbanks ISD (Houston) Hopper Middle School math teacher, Corrie Ann Long, supposedly having sexual relations with a 15-year-old student.

Bossip Article: http://bossip.com/936468/teacher-busted-by-one-time-for-chopping-down-15-year-old-boy/

Now I know these kinds of things happen all the time, but this is crazy! This woman freely displayed her sexual relationship with this young boy in front of her math class. It was reported that Long would freely sit on the lap of the underage boy and allow him to slap her butt in sexual ways. WHAT?! HE’S FIFTEEN!

This is disgusting in so many ways, but what scared me the most is that fact that people are getting away with this stuff. I mean, I definitely would not want to send my child to school knowing that they could possibly be sexually assaulted by his/her own teacher. It’s not only scary, but I’m sure it would buy me a little jail time (to say the very least)

Of course the school officials are “doing everything that they can to ensure that this never happens again” but this statement just is not enough for me. It seems that many schools that have had this happen kind of just wave it off, make a public statement that will pacify the parents and maybe calm the children, but this is happening way more often than it should (which should be NEVER).

This woman deserves to be put in jail, and to think that she could have touched a whole classroom of children is enough to keep her there.

And then there are the critics who say, “Well 15-year-olds are having sex anyway. He had just as much fault as she did.” Yeah, that’s a whole other rant that I could go on about… Til next time,

Love and Happiness.

370… 227…12…Mishap or Malice?

If you’ve been keeping up with the news, it’s almost impossible to overlook the fact that a whole plane is MISSING. 227 passengers, 12 crew members, completely missing. Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 took a course to Beijing, China on March 8th, 2014 and disappeared before landing. Mishap or malice?

For many, this news is quite unnerving, and I know for me, a very scary thing to hear. In an article posted today, there are new findings about this Malaysian flight possibly being led off course on purpose by the pilot and co-pilot. The last thing heard by ground controllers from the co-pilot was “All right, good night.” This was heard approximately 12 MINUTES before the plane satellites were shut off completely. So who did it? Was the plane hijacked? Act of terrorism?

Read more about Flight 370 here.

At this point, it is very hard to say. Many things are pointing to these pilots. The plane was known to have been programmed to take a turn westward way before the pilot made his statement that everything was “all right.” But, one thing has come out of this unfortunate situation- 26 nations have joined together in the search to find this plane. Although the events of this coming together are the least likely to be wanted, it is definitely caused many nations to step up and help one another.

New Evidence in Flight 370:

I’m very interested to see how Malaysian Airlines will continue its business in light of the events taking place. I’m sure their publics are HORRIFIED and many others who travel internationally (not only Malaysian Airlines passengers). I’m sure this will cause a huge change in the trust of airlines, trust that was already shaky to begin with.

Prayers are sent up for these individuals on this plane. Hopefully, Flight 370 will resurface soon with 227 living passengers and 12 living crew members.

“A World Where Every Girl Activates Her Limitless Potential…”

For PR class, we’ve been working some corporate writing. For the assignments, we had to choose a particular organization and find out as much information as we could, and will essentially be following them for the remainder of the semester. Originally I chose BET Network, since Being Mary Jane had just premiered, BET Honors were coming up, and The BET Experience is in the planning stages. I figured there would be a lot of information for me to work with.

But….there wasn’t. BET need a serious revamping plan. But anyway, I turned my attention to a non-profit organization known as Girls on the Run International. One of my younger cousins, Ja’Niya, is involved in it and ALWAYS talks about it (literally, always), but I never really paid any attention to it because I thought the name was ridiculous. Girls on the Run sounds like runaway kids. Why would you teach a kid to run away?! Thankfully, this is not at all what this organization is dedicated to doing. I’ve been researching it for some time now and I’ve literally fallen in LOVE.

GOTR is a 12-week program that teaches life lessons, problem solving skills, fosters confidence among young girls, WHILE encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle. Amazing, right? Through a 24-lesson curriculum, ¬†young girls between 3-8th grades are taught to love who they are and the importance of making and achieving goals. They train for a 5K event that is held at the end of the curriculum, which provides them tangible sense of achievement and shows them that they can do anything that they work towards. AND THEY’RE HAVING FUN DOING IT! Please tell me way I have not heard of this sooner?

I’ve always wanted to start something that encourages young girls to be the best that they can be in the Harrisonburg area. It’s important for children to understand their worth and be confident in who they are, and I definitely believe in the importance of beneficial mentoring. I’ve been talking about doing something like this for about a year now, but never really knew how or where to start. I think I’ve finally found a way ūüôā

Of course, you all know I will most likely never end my blogs without public relations being involved. As much as I just want to write to express my new-found love for this org., I am truly writing because of the AWARENESS factor! ¬†I’m probably not a target audience for this organization since I’m not a 3-8th grade girl, or a parent of a 3-8th grade girl, BUT I am very much interested in starting a branch here in Harrisonburg!! GOTR could have a name that rings bells if the PR was bumped up, and there could be many more branches in areas that aren’t quite aware of this organization.

“We envision a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.”

What a powerful vision statement.
